Systems Before Scale

Scaling a broken process rarely produces growth. It produces a larger version of the same problem.

Growth is an amplifier. Whatever the operating model does well, it will do more of; whatever it does badly, it will do more of that too, usually with less warning and more expensive consequences.

The symptoms that arrive first

  • Numbers that require a person to explain them before they make sense.
  • Recurring exceptions handled manually and never fed back into the process.
  • Working capital consumed faster than revenue explains.
  • Quality dependent on a specific individual being present.

Each of these is manageable at one scale and structurally dangerous at the next. The work of preparing a business to grow is mostly the unglamorous work of making its current behaviour legible.

Scale should feel like doing the same thing more often, not like discovering the business for the first time.
